The climate of the Faroe Islands is dominated by the sea. Winters are mild for the latitude and summers are correspondingly cool. Whilst it can snow in winter, it’s not common, and whilst it can be pleasantly warm in summer, cloudy, cooler days are more usual. The average temperature in summer is 13C and in winter 3C.
During the summer, thanks to the high latitude, the days are long – in late June and early July, for example, there are nearly 20 hours of daylight. Either side of sunrise and sunset at this time of year, it doesn’t really get dark and there’s a sort of half-twilight which keeps the sky remarkably bright.
