Sports
Sport is another thing the Faroese are passionate about.
The islands’ victory over the Austrian national football team in 1991 has gone down in legend – not least because the Faroese team was composed of part-time players who still hold down day jobs as fishermen.
The biggest annual sporting event in the Faroese capital is the Tórshavn marathon, which is held at the beginning of June (www.torshavnmarathon.com). Uphill and downdale, the route winds through the streets of the capital before heading out to the nearby village of Kaldbak, taking in some fabulous coastal and mountain scenery en route – the entire length of the marathon course is 43km.
