Shopping on holiday is always fun – but it’s even more fun when you know you can shop at reduced Tax Free prices!

Although technically part of EU member state, Denmark, the Faroes are not part of the European Union which means you can shop tax free. Just look for the sticker in the shop window, get your tax free cheque from the sales assistant, and cash it in when you leave the islands. Although you’ll find a handful of local shops in the villages across Streymoy, it’s Tórshavn that holds the greatest variety of stores.

So, whether it’s one of those Faroese designer sweaters you’ve seen on the TV or perhaps some locally made handicraft, or, indeed anything that just happens to take your fancy, poking around the shops in the centre of Tórshavn or in the SMS shopping centre is a fun way to spend an afternoon on Streymoy.
