Sport is another thing the Faroese are passionate about.
The islands’ victory over the Austrian national football team in 1991 has gone down in legend – not least because the Faroese team was composed of part-time players who still hold down day jobs as fishermen. International games are held at the stadium on the island of Eysturoy which meets all FIFA requirement, whilst local inter-island games take place in the smaller stadium in Tórshavn itself.
The biggest annual sporting event in the Faroese capital is the Tórshavn marathon, which is held at the beginning of June (www.torshavnmarathon.com). Uphill and downdale, the route winds through the streets of the capital before heading out to the nearby village of Kaldbak, taking in some fabulous coastal and mountain scenery en route – the entire length of the marathon course is 43km.
