Arts & Culture

As you’d expect from a nation of fewer than 50,000 people, the Faroese arts scene is modest in scope.

However, that is not to say it is void of talent or interest. Faroese art can still conjur up something for most tastes: from traditional oil paintings which expertly capture the Faroese islands in the ever-changing light of the northern sky, to superbly executed self-portraits to modernist interpretations of life in the islands. Indeed, work by one of the Faroes’ most striking artists, Edward Fuglø, is justifiably turning heads well beyond the islands.

In addition to paintings, sculpture and glasswork is also well represented in the islands – artwork made of coloured glass has even been used to decorate and enliven one of the Faroes’ sub-sea road tunnels! Perhaps surprisingly, the Faroes also boast a thriving music scene and several festivals take place every summer drawing music lovers from right across the islands and from abroad, too. See Music for more details.
