Earth Hour Faroe Islands

The Earth Hour initiative is easy to participate in. Turn off the lights for one hour! Use the hour to do something positive that makes a difference for us and our home, the Earth.

Earth Hour 2025 is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 22, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The Earth Hour movement has grown year by year, and in the Faroe Islands, Tórshavn Municipality was the first to support it.

Since 2009, the municipality has turned off streetlights and organized events during this hour in March.

The moment the lights are turned off is also a great opportunity to think about what we can do together to protect and preserve the nature we live in and depend on.

The global Earth Hour organizers state on their website, earthhour.org, that the movement’s initial goal was to raise awareness of climate change, but since then, the destruction of animal and plant species has become just as important. Here are seven suggestions from Earth Hour on how we can use Earth Hour:

1: Connect with nature. Go outside in the dark, bring a flashlight. Pause and turn it off. Take in what you can still see and hear.

2: Cook a meal with family or friends. Use local and sustainable ingredients. Try to make a meal with no waste.

3: Enjoy time with your loved ones. Play a game, watch a movie, or have a conversation. Perhaps call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while and invite them to observe Earth Hour with you.

4: Educate yourself. Read up on sustainability tips. For example, check out the new Faroese book “Food – Our Valuable Resource.”

5: Engage in your local community. Attend an Earth Hour event! Or join a group that cleans up or otherwise improves the environment.

6: Be active. Go for a night run or bike ride, exercise, do something extra for your body and health.

7: Unleash your creativity. Create a light artwork in the dark.

The municipality will turn off a large part of the streetlights in Tórshavn during this hour from 8:30 PM.
