Earth Hour 2025
Earth Hour in Tórshavn Municipality
Jarðartímin (Earth Hour) will be happening on Saturday evening, March 22, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM.
During this hour, as we highlight climate change and environmental issues, all public lights in the municipality will be turned off.
You can also take part by switching off your lights and using this time to do something that makes a difference for both us and our natural surroundings.
Since 2009, the municipality has turned off streetlights and organized events during this hour in March, making it the first municipality in the Faroe Islands to support the initiative.
The moment when the lights go out is also a great opportunity to discuss what we can do together to protect and preserve the nature we live in and depend on.
The international Earth Hour organizers state on their website, earthhour.org, that the movement’s initial goal was to raise awareness of climate change. However, over time, the destruction of animal and plant species has become an equally important focus.
Earth Hour 2025 Event
Kristianna Winter Poulsen, Chair of the Nature and Environment Committee, will officially open Earth Hour 2025 at an event in Hoydalar, organized by Tórshavn Municipality. In addition to the opening, Jensia Brodersen and Róa Midjord from Náttúruterapi will explain how we can use nature as a source of mental and physical well-being. Participants will have the opportunity to take part and experience the effects of nature therapy firsthand.
After the walk, the scouts will serve buns and hot cocoa. We will gather around the fire pit for a closing reflection. The lights will then be switched back on, and everyone will head home. Please bring your own cup!
The event is free, but registration is required below – limited spots available.
Seven Ways to Spend Earth Hour
- Connect with nature. Step outside into the darkness with a flashlight. Pause, turn it off, and take in what you can still see and hear.
- Cook with family or friends. Use local and sustainable ingredients. Try to prepare a meal with zero waste.
- Enjoy time with loved ones. Play a game, have a conversation, or call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while and invite them to observe Earth Hour with you.
- Educate yourself. Read up on sustainability tips.
- Engage in your local community. Attend an Earth Hour event or join an organization that helps clean up or improve the environment.
- Be active. Go for an evening run or bike ride, exercise, or do something extra for your body and health.
- Unleash your creativity. Create a light artwork in the darkness.
Everyone can make a difference – including you!
